Five parallel strands of activity run across the nine-month appointment, from August 2026 through April 2027.

CTE Interface Conference milestone / deliverable Summative evaluation

Semester one

Fall 2026 — building the foundation

The fall semester establishes teaching practice, pedagogical grounding, and the observational basis for each fellow’s instructional innovation.

Teach one course of record

Fellows lead a single course under a supervised instructional appointment, receiving formative feedback on course planning, instruction, assessment, and student engagement.

Biweekly mentoring begins

Mentor meetings begin in preparation for the semester and continue biweekly — covering teaching challenges, classroom observations, professional growth, and career development.

Complete a CTE teaching track

Fellows complete either the Great Teaching for New Faculty Certificate through Passport to Great Teaching, or the Pathways to Excellence program.

Observe exemplary engineering courses

Structured classroom observations across two class sessions, followed by guided reflection on evidence-based instructional practices.

Propose an instructional innovation

Drawing on observations, professional development, and mentor discussion, each fellow proposes a new pedagogy, educational technology, assessment strategy, or course redesign to carry into the spring.

Ongoing formative assessment

Mentors document observations of planning, instruction, assessment, and engagement throughout the semester.

Semester two

Spring 2027 — implementation & dissemination

The spring semester doubles the teaching load and turns the fall proposal into an evaluated, publicly presented contribution.

Teach two courses of record

Fellows take on a two-course load, continuing to receive formative mentor feedback across both.

Monthly mentor check-ins

Mentoring shifts to a monthly cadence, with continued feedback on the instructional innovation and scholarly teaching project.

Implement & evaluate the innovation

The proposed innovation is deployed in one of the two spring courses and systematically evaluated.

Present at the CTE Interface Conference

Fellows deliver a scholarly teaching contribution, meeting the appointment’s expectation of demonstrating scholarly teaching through systematic evaluation and dissemination.

Final structured evaluation

A summative evaluation conducted jointly by the faculty mentor(s) and the Department or Unit Chair assesses overall growth and readiness as an engineering educator.

Program completion

Fellows conclude the nine-month appointment having satisfied all three summative requirements.

    Appointment and mentoring begin

    Fellows are paired with mentors; biweekly meetings start in preparation for the semester.

  2. Fall 2026

    CTE track & classroom observations

    Complete the selected CTE teaching development program and attend two observation sessions in exemplary engineering courses.

  3. End of Fall 2026

    Innovation proposal submitted

    Each fellow proposes the instructional innovation to be implemented in a Spring 2027 course.

  4. January – April 2027

    Implementation and evaluation

    The innovation is deployed and systematically evaluated within a course of record.

  5. Spring 2027

    CTE Interface Conference presentation

    The culminating scholarly teaching contribution is presented publicly.

  6. End of Spring 2027

    Joint summative evaluation

    Faculty mentor(s) and the Department or Unit Chair jointly assess the fellow’s growth and readiness.
